Direct x9.0c is on the COD2 installation disk. Near the end of the install process it should ask if you want to install it.

Actually if you throw disc one in your drive, and pull up the main window or explore the folders, the direct X button is right there on the main menu or in it's cute little folder; respectively.

I've tried the Direct X (to reinstall) under XP, but all it told me is that I was up to date.

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare machine to install Vista, and I don't want to goof up one of my valid XP licenses.
