About 2 weeks ago I had to do a system restore. After that, every time after I go on Tob via shortcut, after about 3 minutes my game will freeze on me for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds it will go back on. Some times with no problems, and some times with a bad lag. If i leave the game and comeback, the lag disappears and I can play the rest of the day with no problems. But if I restart computer it will start doing it all over. Please advise.

What I did so far: system restore x2
reinstall CoD x2
reinstall ToB.... no results

Hey Salaga - couple things off the top of my head...

1. Defragment the computer (start - settings - accessories - system tools - disk defragmenter).

2. Run Ad-Aware (free download - make sure you get the most up to date definition file).

3. For the TOB stuff - might be good idea when you uninstall/reinstall COD2 - you ensure your Main folder is completely empty of custom files then allow them to be downloaded when you join the TOB server.

4. Ensure virus-scan is not running a full scan or scanning all files while you try to play. For example, if your computer tries to kick-off a full virus scan it will really lag your computer.

5. How much memory do you have in your PC and what is your video card>

6. Check your start-up folder and ensure you do not have anything running in the background upon starting the computer

7. what interner connection do you have? Cable/DSL? do a speed test - www.dslreports.com to see how it is performing. Contact your provider if it seems to be slow

8. How is your internet hooked up? Ensure the appropriate speed cables are in place (for example, having a 10 mbps rated cable in the chain between the computer and your internet will slow it down).

9. tons of other stuff -start there (and any othe radvice from folks).

Let me know if I can help in anyway - would be glad to try and get you back up and running.

What operating system are you using, ie. Windows XP, etc.

Thank You for a prompt response.
I have XP. Computer is fast and RAM is decent. I use about 15-20% of my hard drive. After system restore it should be pretty organized. Just 2 weeks ago I've got Fiber Optic Internet Service ( that's why I did system restore, to get maximum out of it). On my new service I've watched maps downloading at 1300+Kb/sec. What can I do ?

Wow - im jealous - havent justified the cost for FIOS for me yet...

So internet connection speed does not seem to be an issue.

I think you should try a few of the items I suggested - like the defrag. Especially after a system restore - that hard drive can be like a bowl of spagetti (or macaroni and cheese if you are so inclined).

You can check this relatively quickly - go to start - programs -applications - system tools - disk defragmenter.... then select to analyze your C drive.

You will get a report that will tell you the % file fragmentation and % total fragmentation.... Let me know how that looks.

Also - ensure you totally clean out your recylce bin, temp internet files, etc before defragmenting.

When reloading COD2 - ensure they main folder is clean of custom stuff - sometimes a single file in there can screw it up....

hope that helps

Excellent suggestions there, Tom.

In addition, I would re-download and reinstall your system drivers - if not all of them, then at least the video and sound card drivers - maybe download the latest, uninstall the current ones on your system (also possibly run drivercleaner, although I never do), and install the newest versions.

Doing a system restore reverts your system back to an older state - including previous drivers and .dll's - I almost never do a system restore unless I'm having some serious problems. For me (always installing and uninstalling software and drivers), running a system restore is more apt to put my machine in an unknown state.

Also, you should re-apply the Microsoft patches after a system restore to ensure you have the latest os patches.

Intermittant lags are usually symptoms of a problem with either a video card driver or a sound card driver.

Please post back.

Thank You guy's, doing it all right now. My graphics card was updated ( XFX 7900GTX ) and came with installation CD which I've installed after system restore, so is sound driver. Should I do it again? And my main folder have some files which i don't know what they for. And I have no other mods but ToB

P.S. Tom, If you get a FiOS bundle, my is from Verizon, You can get a pretty good deal on it. I've end up paying $120 for a Internet, HD TV and full service Phone. Less than I've payed before for a cable

Good one's Dave...

Salaga - definitely the windows update and driver updates for your sound/video and patch updates for COD. Even if you installed from the CD that came with it - ensure to get the latest drivers off the internet (they may have posted newer ones since it was packaged with the CD).

Another item to check - version of Direct X.

Post a list of what is in your main folder - from install - it does put a few files there out of the box.

Let us know how that defrag looks too..

One other thing that messes things up... are you directly cabled to the internet or running through a wireless router? (I think Dave posted this for someone else) - make sure your router is not resetting your IP or something during gameplay. ALthough with this - you would actually lose your interenet connection so I dont think it would be that.

Yes - Verizon is in my neighborhood... been strongly considering it (after they tore up my yard to put it in).

Unfortunately - our neighborhood is forced to pay for Comcast cable and my cell is through my work... not sure I could get the same package deal.

I think they quoted me ~ $50 per month. I'm paying $29 now for DSL (had cable internet from comcast but they sucked here - bad cable leading to the house or something...)

Thanks for the info...

OK, It crushed again. Defragmenter went well. Windows is all updated. I'll try to bring my CoD main folder here.. Well, I don"t know how, so I'll just list them:
players save 7.iwd 17.iwd 38.iwd 43.iwd 45.iwd 72.iwd 88.iwd 91.iwd 93.iwd 94.iwd 96.iwd 101.iwd 102.iwd hunkusage iw_00.iwd -thru- iw_15iwd localized_english_iw_00.iwd - thru- 11.iwd
I hope it means something.
I'll reinstall Graphics for now
And really appreciate the help

to start fresh - this is ALL that should be in your COD main folder (until you get the downloads from TOB.

http://www.theoldbreed.com/imagehosting/3314658c5938aaab.bmp

I would suggest (if still crashing)... once you have a fresh install of COD2 - just load the game on a vanilla server (not TOB and without TOB files) and see if you crash. That would eliminate the COD custom files as the issue.

Another thing... instead of loading COD2 immediately after a reboot - wait 10 minutes (after the computer boots) then try COD2... see if it crashes without going into COD2

One last thing - what is exactly happening when it "crashes"?

Error message?

COD2 error message?

Can you access the internet when it crashes?

Hope this helps

it is not crushes. But exactly 3min it to the game it will freeze, I cant move or do anything, and the sound will be like a stuck record. All this is for 30sec. Than it will go back to normal, but most of the times with a lag. I will leave server and comeback right away and play rest of the day OK. I will reinstall the game tomorrow. Sorry to waste your time on a small problem but I get used to make things work right

Tom in that folder you posted are those 26 items all should i have?
Should I delit the rest and ToB folder?

Macaroni

interesting... that leads me to think there is something running on your router/computer at ~ the 3 min mark (like that droping the IP thing).

Ok - probably best (before reinstalling COD) to see if it is COD related or not. The way to look at that - dont go into COD and see if you can get the internet/computer to lag. Or if you have another on-line game you play (like BF) play that (may the TOB gods not strike me down for suggesting it).... see if you get lag in that game ~ 3 minutes.

If no - then it is likely COD related. If yes - then you do not have to focus on fixing COD - but rather some of the other stuff we mentioned...

This will help narrow down the next steps.

not a waste of time m8 - that stuff would annoy the crap out of me... plus you can't have an excuse in case i shoot you ("my computer isnt working right..."):icon_wink:

ok - based on that info you gave.. i started looking at your graphics card specifically.... I found this post on the graphic card site...

Make sure you are using the 84.20 drivers here:
http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_do...bit_84.20.html

They fix some freezing issues.

Also, try testing the card at 650/1.6GHz clocks to see the freezing goes away.

Can you try to set the clock speed to what they said?

Read this post as well.... sounds like people have a very similar issue with other games with this graphics card that you are having...

Hope this helps...

Sorry Tom it is getting to much for me. Cant blame the card tho, it was working fine for 2 years. Probably will have to get my brother in law here to fix it, he works for Nokia as software developer. This guy is tough to lure in but if he gets to it he'll fix it.... sooner or later. Thank You for your help, but all i can do is the very basic staff

Either you have not installed the 1.3 patch yet or you are missing some files in this pic.

No the patch was on. I tried to reapply it and it was up to date. No lack with Administrator either. Slowly going bananas....

Unclefester...
Yes - i was trying to get a pic right after the COD2 install (before patch) but good point... i never mentioned reinstalling the patch...

Might be worth it (unless it already exists) to create a stickey post that has some of the basics for troubleshooting COD issues (like connection and stuff).

Not sure if it woud benefit the masses or not... or maybe just posting like this will help get the problems solved...

Salaga - hope you get it resolved - has to suck when things are causing issues like that...

do you have another viable video card you could try?

From what I read (and posted earlier) - your exact problem (including the 3-4 minutes into game play and the sound hanging/skipping then fine after 30 seconds to a minute) is spot on with that model of video card...

Hard to help much though without being in front of the computer... You could always call the video card maker/support line and explain ...
