I'd like to upgrade my ram. Currently I have 2x512mb of the faster ones. Can I add 2x1gb with the same speed or they all have to be of the same size? E-Bay has those for a $90 for 2 gigs, is it a good deal?

Salga, it truly depends on your system...yes 2-1 gig sticks will greatly improve your proformance, it also depends on the sticks themselves.
1. is your ram DDR or DDR2? you need to make sure that it is the same, given you have only 2 slots it sounds like your system is older and will use DDR ram.
2. there are bargin basment ram and there is good ram, make sure that they at least have heat sinks ,could you provide a link for the ebay item your looking at?
3. look for reveiws on the sticks, that will help you make an informed desision.

In my experience most HP desktop systems do require 2 of the same size sticks in each bank of ram.
You say you have 4 slots, that would mean 2 banks.
SO YES you should be able to install the additional sticks in the vacant slots.
You will probably get an error message when you power on the first time, just go into the BIOS setup and it will update the amount of ram.
I have 3 gig of ram in my system as well 2X512 and 2X1Gig and it works great.
