Just got a newish motherboard (http://www.theoldbreed.com/showthread.php?t=3778). Everything works except for my DVD drive :icon_frown:
When the IDE cable is plugged in, it wont power up or be recognised in the BIOS or XP Pro. If I remove the cable, it will power up!!!
If I swap it over with my harddrives, BIOS recognises it but won't boot from my drives which it no longer recognises.
Any help would be appreciated guys and gals as this is the only stumbling block between me and CoD4.

what is the boot order in the BIOS?
did this DVD drive work in a previous PC?
You may need to check the jumpers (if any) on the back of the harddrive and/or DVD drive. To ensure they are set properly...
when all connected - is the DVD getting power?
Is there another CD/DVD drive connected as well?
just a few things off the top of my head m8...

Hi Mac
The boot order only shows my HDDs' and not the DVD drive. It worked perfectly in another system and haven't changed a thing. What puzzles me is that the HDDs are showing as the 3rd master and slave. The mbo has two SATA connections and three IDE. the HDD are connected to IDE1 and the DVD to IDE2.
I have tried the DVD n all jumper settiings, ie. master, slave and cable select. it is only recognised when the IDE cable is unplugged or it is plugged into IDE1. When all is coonnected, the DVD doesn't seem to get power (no light activity and won't eject).
I think i need to get a SATA to IDE adapter for the HDDs and then plug the DVD into IDE1 or get a SATA DVD.
I've been around and making computers since the '80s and have never come across this before - i even built my own hoem wired network with server etc.

From what you're saying, it sounds like both the SATA and the IDE connections are enabled in the BIOS.
You said that the HDD's are showing up as the 3rd master and slave...from that, I am assuming that the SATA controllers are occupying controllers 0 and 1, and forcing the IDE to be controller 2, for a total of 3 controllers.
I think that's a default configuration (for some BIOS's) as it is still a little unusual to have a SATA DVD (or CD) drive. The (my) assumption is that you can have multiple SATA hard drives, and still use an IDE DVD or CD.
Is there a BIOS option to turn off or disable the SATA interface?

Hi Dave,
You were right about the BIOS. The default setting was for the SATA to be primary, with IDE as secondary. I have swapped them around, but it still won't power up or recognise the DVD drive :icon_frown:
It looks like I'm going to have to open up my pc again, which is a pain lol
Thanks for your help matey :)

:)
But, you're not using a SATA drive (if I understand correctly).
It still sounds like you can only use one IDE controller if the SATA controller is enabled - but you have three IDE devices (requiring two IDE controllers).
What are the options for the SATA controllers? Primary, secondary, and disabled?
Can you just turn off the SATA controller?
I checked both of my machines....and I have options to disable SATA - I'm only using SATA on one of them, and that has two IDE devices (a CD burner and a DVD+- dual-layer burner) on the same channel.
I didn't realize the other machine even had a SATA connector - it was not enabled from the factory, and it came with an IDE drive. I just assumed it was only IDE (it is close to 4 years old).

If I disable the SATA in the BIOS it disables the IDE as well!!! I've ordered a SATA 20x DVD r/w from www.play.com and it only cost me £18 (sterling) with free delivery.
I will be upgrading the mobo sometime in the new year anyway, so this is just an annoyance really.
Thanks for all your help :)

ohhhh....that sucks.
That's a good, cheap choice, getting the SATA DVD to get through your issue.
Please let us know how it works.
