Alright the computer illiterate Ol'Digger now has a copy of CoD4.

Can someone please explain in basic english how to set up my player name as I can't seem to get the darn thing to accept the ToB| before my name or the ' in my name?

Then can someone please explain, again in simple english, how to set up a shortcut to the CoD4 sniper server.

I had a few problems too matey, especially as my keyboard is buget and doesn't let you do the | symbol....!?!:5duh:

Way round it, cut & paste your name from somewhere into it, works a treat Hope that helps :)

yes - to build on the above - easy way to do this without even running the game...


go to your player folder(I think...c:\program files\activision\Call of Duty 4\...)


you are looking for the file called mp_config

open it using wordpad

find your player name in the list (use CTRL+F)

change your name to what you want it to me (14-15 charaters max)

then save

and you are done

As I said I am totally computer illiterate.

I can't cut and paste into the profile field box, nor can I find the file you are talking about changing.

Can you explain step by step......

Sorry mate, I completely lied.... I was sure I just cut&paste it in but must have tried it and didn;t work - only sorted it yesterday.

Anyway the file you're looking for, as Mac mentioned, is mp_config.

You can find it c:\program files\activision\Call of Duty 4\players\"your current profile name"\mp_config

Right click and hit open. It'll ask you what programme to use so select Wordpad. Also make sure you deselect the tick box saying always use this programme to read this type of file.

When opened in wordpad, scroll down till you find something like seta_name "your current profile name"

Put in "ToB|Ol'Digger" and hit save....

Hey presto it's all sorted.

If you can't type in the | cut & paste it from here...

Go to Options after you start up CoD4, Select Multiplayer Options, Look for player name and put your name in there with the tag.

The easiest way to insert the "|" character is "SHFT \" or shift backslash. If you don't have the "\" symbol on your keyboard, the next easiest thing is to hold down the "ALT" key and enter "124" this must be entered while pressing the ALT key then release the ALT key and the | should appear.....

It would appear that although it wouldn't let me do anything to my profile in single player, it has allowed me to change it in Multiplayer......

And I was even able to connect to the ToB server !!!!! Not that there was anyone there to see it...LOL
