I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on a truly great man, Sir Edmund Hillary, who has died at the grand old age of 88.
This man has had a great impact on my life - someone who showed remarkable courage and determination to conquer Mt. Everest, and then stayed so totally grounded, modest and generous in the aftermath of world wide glory. He continued to work with, and improved the lives of Nepalese people, and showed us all the blessings of the human condition. He has my utmost respect, and as a fellow climber I salute you...
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, his memory shall never pass.

It is indeed sad that he has passed but is a testament to HOW a life should be lead and how gracious and honorable one can be.

Sir Edmund was indeed a truly great man.
Not only as the conquerer of Everest (First European recorded) he took the time to acknowledge his Sherpa guide.
What may seem like an obvious addition but at the time this was seen as somewhat outragous.
His passing will certainly not go un-noticed nor should it.
His work with the Nepalese people continues to this day.
My condolences.

He did it back when there were no ropes and ladders hanging off the mountain. Truly a strong man ( with a great guide).

Sir Ed, when he climbed Everest he took a photo of Serpa Tengsin and did not ask Tengsin to take one of himself, this, I think, showed how humble he was.
He died, following a fall while he was in Napal last April while he was helping the Nepalese people that he loved, he never quite recoverd from the fall, remember he was 87 at the time and was still helping in the villege with Sherpa Tengsin.
He will never be forgotten.
