During a game last night I noticed this strange burning smell then a waft of smoke quickly followed by my PC dying a death ! I'm hoping its just the PSU and therefore Ive ordered a new 700w unit. My question is, could this have damaged anything else? :icon_frown:

perhaps....
but if it was in the power supply and you just smelled smoke (but your computer was still running) it was likely the fan or something in the power supply going bad and did not damage ur pc
I would think your pc would have shorted out if it was something more serious

I Know thi ssounds goofy, but i am not having you on, take the power unit out of the computer and sniff it. the stench of electronic death is probably on it. since it was a 700 unit it is probably the reason. If it did blow, the only damage would be a spike in output to the motherboard, which would be toast. This, however, is not likely, when they go thye usuallly don't spike.
This is pretty common with the power demands of many of the Video cards and CPU's these days. Get a power unit with more OOMPF I use an 1100
Good Luck!

haha it was a 500w psu that blew and yes it did smell when i sniffed in the back of it. The psu ive ordered is a 700w :sheep: that clearly states its fine for my pc build set-up. The 1100 w psu's are mega £££ over here, I simply dont have the cash for one, so I hope the 700w unit will be ok :o
Thanks for your post tho.

Utilising DUAL 12V Rails for increased efficiency,
+12V(1) = 18A, +12(2)V = 21A,
Watch your loading on the 12v rails if you have a video card that has a seperate power plug, check which rail feeds the mobo.
The issue that can arise from multiple rails is if you have a potential 16A load on your 18A rated rail, that other 2A is pretty much lost. Or you end up with a rail that is overloaded.

I don't know if you have a company like Newegg.com over there.
I had to upgrade to a 1k myself with my old system. The new 1k's are much longer, check the spec's before purchase. I had to move a vent fan to accomodate the lenght.
