Looking to host a simple website for showcasing(no plans to sell online at this time) some of my photography and also have a file server I can access from anywhere on the web.
I was looking a using a QNAP TS-209 Pro II (http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=94) (it has a Linux embedded system which can run a update client) and use a DNS hosting service (something like DynDNS (http://www.dyndns.com/))to redirect to my dynamic IP address. I still reading up on all of this but would like the opinions from those that deal with this stuff. Thank you for your time.

why not just simplify life for yourself and get a hosting package with a domain name that will suite what you want the site for ?

Hostgator in the US has some cool deals on at the moment
Look at the Hatchling package
http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml

Or even GoDaddy's Economy Plan
https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.asp?app_hdr=&ci=5652

You can pick up a cheap domain name from GoDaddy whilst you are there
http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/registrar/search.asp?ci=8990

Lastly if you just want to put images etc online you can use tons of free php software like:

http://www.4homepages.de/

http://coppermine-gallery.net/

http://gallery.menalto.com/

If you wanted to jazz it up a little you could work your mind around Joomla
which is an EXCELLENT free CMS
http://www.joomla.org/

Well hope that's enough for you to get started

My mom has her own web business and could register and host a fully functional website for you for dirt cheap... you do all the work, or she will even help if you need it. PM me for details if you are interested!

Just a simple question, what is wrong with sending the pic's to flickr and marking all of the private? you could access them, but no one else.

if you wished to display them, you could embed the link into your own page, but you would not have to store the graphics that way.

This photo is not available on my public pictures, but I can link to it.

I am think of using this as a back-up server also, I will be storing more than just my pictures online. Hosting the website is more of bonus perk of running this QNAP NAS. It is also sort of a project to actually be able to have a "server" that I can access from anywhere that I set up on my network at home.

If anyone has any other ideas, keep them coming, thank you.
